I have built and played with several free pbx machines in the past and seeing this site got me fired up for another round. I have tried the instructions at Jeff Doozan's site with no luck. After further investigation it looks like I need to crack open the docksatr and solder in a serial cable before I can have any fun. Is this correct or is there another way in?

Is your stock linux still working?  If it does, you don't need the serial cable.
